Pavement Management and Street Conditions
Cornelius' road condition score is sliding from 70 toward 59 over a decade on the current $725,000-a-year paving budget. Holding steady would cost $2.6 million a year and fixing everything $8.7 million — council agreed the status quo isn't working and wants to explore options, possibly with a town hall.
Regional Transportation Funding Crisis
Washington County wants to double the vehicle registration fee from $30 to $60 a year to fund road maintenance and capital projects, with 40% of the money going back to cities. Cornelius councilors pushed back hard, worried about the hit to low-income households, and Mayor Dalin urged a phased increase instead. Nothing is decided — the county board will consider an ordinance this summer.
Relocating the collector road to SW 345th Avenue
The city's plan for a future collector road in the southeast growth area is shifting from 29th Boulevard to 345th Avenue, using the existing rail crossing. The original plan stalled because of railroad demands and a $14 million price tag versus about $6 million collected. This changes where the main north-south road — and eventually sidewalks, bike lanes, and development access — will go.
